Manual muscle testing is a physical examination that tests the function of a patient’s muscle. During the test, resistance is applied to a muscle, and the patient is asked to exert force against the resistance. Several scales exist to rate the condition of a muscle based on the force the patient is able to apply. After the test, muscles are rated somewhere between strong and weak.

Manual muscle testing is useful for physicians across a range of practices, such as the osteopathic, dental, naturopathic, medical, podiatric, chiropractic, and acupuncture fields. In applied kinesiology, manual muscle testing is also used to identify and evaluate neurological responses to treatments, as well as nutritional, mental-emotional, and electromagnetic responses.
